DayRoll Q6 Max: Honest Answers Before You Buy
The DayRoll TeamThe short answer: the DayRoll Q6 Max is a compact digital camera built to give you warm, soft, flash-lit early 2000s photos straight out of the camera, with the practical extras of a modern one: 75MP photos, 4K video, 18x digital zoom, a flip screen, two batteries and a 64GB card in the box. It costs $189.95 in Black, Pearl or Pink. Below are the questions worth asking before you buy, answered as straight as we can, including the things it is not good at.
The camera
What exactly is the Q6 Max?
It is our flagship digicam: a small, simple digital camera designed around the look of the point-and-shoots people carried in the early 2000s. It has a small sensor, simple optics and no computational processing, which is what gives the photos their character, plus a true built-in flash for that bright, direct party-photo look.
What comes in the box?
The camera, a 64GB SD card already installed, two rechargeable batteries, a USB-C charging cable and a wrist strap. There is nothing else you need to buy to start shooting.
What do the photos actually look like?
Warm, soft and slightly grainy, like the photos from a compact camera twenty years ago. They are not as sharp or as clean as a new phone, and that is deliberate. Indoors and at night, the flash lights up whoever is closest and lets the background fall away, which is the look it is built for.
Is 75MP the reason to buy it?
Not on its own. 75MP is the largest photo size the camera saves, and it is handy when you want to crop in or shoot a wide landscape. But on a small sensor, megapixels mostly change file size and how far you can crop, not the character of the photo. The character comes from the sensor, the lens and the flash. You can also turn the resolution down for an even more nostalgic result, and we explain how in our guide to getting the early 2000s look.
Does it shoot video?
Yes, it records 4K video as well as photos, so the same camera covers the speeches, the dancing and the drive home.
Is the flash a real flash?
Yes. The Q6 Max has a true built-in flash that fires a short burst of light, not a continuous LED. That burst is what creates the hard, bright early 2000s look. It is also the main difference from our smaller Q5 DigiCam, which uses an adjustable LED fill light instead.
Does it have filters?
Yes, there are built-in filters and effects, including sepia, so you can change the mood without editing anything afterwards.
How good is the zoom?
It has 18x digital zoom. Digital zoom trades detail for reach, so photos get softer the further you zoom. It is useful for getting a bit closer to a stage or across a beach, not for wildlife photography.

Is it hard to use?
No. It works on its own, with no app needed to take photos and no photography experience needed. Charge it, turn it on, shoot.
How do I get photos onto my phone?
The Q6 Max transfers photos wirelessly to your phone, tablet or laptop. You can also take out the SD card and copy the files across the old-fashioned way.
How long does the battery last?
That depends a lot on how much you use the flash, the screen and video. What we can say is that it comes with two batteries, so when one runs down you swap it and keep going, and the batteries charge over USB-C.
Is it good in low light?
With the flash, yes, for people and anything close. Without the flash, like any small camera, it struggles in the dark. If you want a clean photo of a city skyline at night, your phone will do a better job.
Is it good for travel?
It is well suited to it. The zoom, the 64GB card and the second battery mean you are not stopping to swap cards or hunt for a charger, and the photos come back looking like a holiday rather than a set of postcards.
Can I print the photos?
Yes. Transfer them to your phone and print them with the DayRoll Pocket Printer, which comes with 25 sheets of photo paper, or send the files to any photo printing service.
